The Sikh American community launched its centennial celebration at the University of the Pacific here Sept. 22 with a conference about “The Sikh Journey in America” and the inauguration of a Gadri Baba Museum.

The museum is located at Gurdwara Sahib Stockton, the first Sikh settlement in the United States. To celebrate the settlement, 16 scholars prepared 19 academic papers on the history and culture of the Sikh American community.

September 23, 2012 – Sikh History Museum opens

Where: Stockton Gurdwara Sahib, 1930 S. Grant St., Stockton, CA 95206
The first musuem of its kind in the USA will open on Stockton Gurdwara’s grounds. Its premier artifact is the hand-cranked printing press used by the revolutionary Gadar Party leaders (who also founded Stockton Gurdwara) to print The Gadar, the first Punjabi-language newspaper in the USA. Published from 1913 to 1948, this paper was instrumental in achieving India’s independence from the British Empire.

September 30, 2012 – The Voyage of the Ghadar: An Eastern Perspective Conference

Presented in the Punjabi language, this will be another exciting one-day conference featuring scholars from the East who will offer perspective on the Ghadar Movement that started shortly after the beginning of Sikh migration to the United States of America.

October 13 & 14, 2012 – Community Centennial Celebration

Where: Stockton Gurdwara Sahib, 1930 S. Grant St., Stockton, CA 95206

The 100th anniversary of Pacific Coast Khalsa (Free Divine Communion) Society Stockton, California incorporated on 27th May, 1912, concluded on October 14, 2012 with a Sikh Parade in the city of Stockton. The society established the First Sikh Temple of the United States within five months of its incorporation. South Grant Street, on which the religious flag unfurled amid objections from some of the neighboring residents in 1912, has now been changed to Sikh Temple Street. Stockton City Mayor Ann Johnston dedicated it to 100 years of eventful history of the Stockton Sikh Temple.
